This automatic seam welding manipulator, also known as a welding column and boom, is engineered for heavy-duty industrial seam welding of large-diameter pipes, pressure vessels, storage tanks and cylindrical shells. Built around four core strengths — high positioning accuracy, robust stable structure, flexible multi-process compatibility and remarkable productivity improvement — it delivers consistent, repeatable welding results and effectively reduces labor dependence for fabrication workshops.
Matched with welding rotators, this manipulator performs both longitudinal straight seam welding and circumferential girth seam welding. It supports multiple welding processes to suit carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel vessel production. Compared with manual welding, it eliminates uneven speed, inconsistent heat input and human error, producing uniform weld beads, lowering rejection rates and reducing post-weld grinding work. It is a reliable automation upgrade for boiler, petrochemical, pipeline and pressure vessel manufacturing plants.
The vertical column and horizontal boom adopt thick high-strength steel welded construction. After stress relief annealing and precision machining, the frame minimizes deflection and vibration even when the boom is fully extended. This rigid foundation guarantees outstanding positioning accuracy throughout the entire welding cycle, avoiding seam offset and ensuring a stable arc condition.
The lifting and cross travel movements are driven by industrial reducers and heavy-duty chain transmission. Guided by precision linear guideways, the boom runs smoothly with adjustable stepless speed. The uniform traveling speed controls heat input precisely, which is critical for preventing burn-through, undercut, ripples and other welding defects on thick pipe and vessel walls.
The torch mounting head supports fine adjustment in X, Y and Z axes plus angular rotation. Operators can quickly calibrate arc length, torch offset and inclination angle according to wall thickness, groove type and welding procedure. An optional servo seam tracking module can be added to automatically follow the weld seam for enhanced precision.
The heavy slewing base allows the whole column-boom assembly to rotate, so the welding head can swing away for workpiece loading and repositioning. It enables one machine to serve multiple welding stations and improves the layout flexibility of busy fabrication shops. An electric slewing drive is available as an upgrade option.
All welding cables, gas hoses and control signal wires are routed inside durable energy chains. The carrier protects lines from repeated bending, friction and impact during boom extension and retraction, reducing cable wear, gas leakage and unexpected downtime.
This manipulator works seamlessly with MIG, MAG, TIG and SAW submerged arc welding power sources. It can be configured for different welding processes on the same machine, meeting the diverse production requirements of carbon steel, stainless steel and low-alloy pressure vessel workpieces.
