Pressure vessel manufacturing demands high-quality, repeatable welds for heavy cylindrical shells, storage tanks and process vessels. Manual welding of these large heavy shells presents multiple challenges: inconsistent weld formation, fluctuating penetration, high risk of welding defects, heavy dependence on skilled welders and low throughput. These issues can lead to failed non-destructive testing, high rework cost and delayed delivery schedules.
Our LT-MZ1222 column and boom welding manipulator is built specifically for pressure vessel production workflows. When paired with welding turning rolls, the system securely supports and rotates heavy shells while the manipulator holds the welding torch in a fixed, precisely controlled position. This setup delivers stable, high-integrity welds for both circumferential ring seams and longitudinal straight seams on pressure vessels, storage tanks and large cylindrical shells.
The machine supports multiple welding processes including submerged arc welding, MIG and MAG welding. It handles carbon steel, stainless steel and low alloy steel workpieces widely used in boiler, chemical, oil & gas and heavy equipment workshops. It is a core automation upgrade for factories that produce heavy pressure-containing shells.
The welding manipulator consists of a rigid vertical column, extendable horizontal boom, vertical lifting assembly, horizontal travel drive, multi-direction torch fine-tuning unit, PLC control cabinet, cable drag chain protection and full safety interlock system. It works together with welding turning rolls to form a complete pressure vessel welding workstation.
The heavy vessel shell is placed on the turning rolls. The turning rollers rotate the shell at a steady, adjustable constant speed. The column-boom manipulator adjusts the welding torch to the target weld line and maintains its position during welding. The relative rotation between the stationary torch and rotating workpiece creates continuous, uniform circumferential welds. For longitudinal seams, the boom travels horizontally at controlled speed to complete straight seam welding on rolled cylinder plates.

Automated mechanical positioning eliminates human hand shake and speed variation. Weld bead shape, penetration and fusion remain consistent. The finished welds easily meet NDT inspection requirements for pressure vessels and heavy tanks.
Designed for large, heavy cylindrical shells used in pressure vessel workshops. Combined with turning rolls, it supports smooth rotation of heavy workpieces and stable welding performance.
Capable of both circumferential ring seam and longitudinal straight seam welding. It covers the two primary welding operations for cylinder fabrication and maximizes equipment utilization rate.
Save parameter sets for different shell diameters, wall thicknesses and materials. Changing product specifications only takes a short time, reducing machine debugging downtime and improving workshop productivity.
Compatible with mainstream welding power sources and turning roll models. It can weld carbon steel, stainless steel and low alloy steel for various pressure vessel applications.
Automated welding reduces reliance on highly skilled welders. Stable welding quality cuts down defects, repair work and scrap rate, lowering total manufacturing cost.
Heavy-duty stress-relieved frame resists deformation during long-hour continuous operation. Multi-layer safety interlock system prevents collision and overtravel accidents for heavy workshop environments.
This welding manipulator is widely deployed in heavy manufacturing sectors:
For pressure vessel and tank manufacturers, weld quality directly determines product safety and qualification rate. The LT-MZ1222 column & boom welding manipulator enables standardized, automated welding of heavy shells. It stabilizes product quality, increases daily output, shortens order lead time and mitigates the challenge of recruiting experienced welders.
Built for heavy industrial use with low maintenance demand, this welding manipulator delivers long service life and strong return on investment for vessel and tank fabrication workshops.
