Welding Groove Types

In order to ensure the quality of the welding, the workpiece can be machined before welding, and it can be cut by gas or milling, usually beveled and sometimes curved. For example, two steel plates with a thickness of 10 mm are to be welded together, in order to make the weld to be firm, the chamfer will be milled at the edge of the plate. This is called the bevel.

Due to the difference in material thickness and welding quality requirements, there are many different forms of the welded joint, such as K type, V type, I type, U type, X type and so on.

Common Groove Types
  • V Type With Blunt Edge
  • V Type
  • K Type
  • I Type
  • Single J Type
  • Double J Type
  • Single U Type
  • Double U Type

The main purpose of the groove is to ensure the penetration of the root of the weld, so that the welding heat source can penetrate the root of the joint to ensure the joint quality. At the same time, the groove can also adjust the ratio of the base metal to the filler metal.
